Hanmi Bank Data Breach Investigation

Hanmi Bank is a community bank based in California. Specializing in small business banking, Hanmi Bank offers a wide array of products and services, including SBA Lending, Commercial Real Estate Lending, Equipment Leasing, Specialty Lending, Treasury Management Services and more.2 Additionally, Hanmi Bank provides personal banking services such as consumer loans, home loans, checking and savings accounts, credit and debit cards, and internet and mobile banking. Founded in 1982, Hanmi Bank now has over $7 billion in total assets and more than $6 billion in total deposits.2 Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Hanmi Bank has 35 branch locations and 8 loan production offices across 9 states.


Recently, Hanmi Bank was notified that its third-party vendor, Fiserv, had experienced a data breach in which Hanmi Bank data, including sensitive personal identifiable information, may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Fiserv determined that an unauthorized party may have accessed this sensitive information through a vulnerability in the MOVEit Transfer file sharing software, which Fiserv uses, between May 27 and May 31, 2023. In January 2024, Hanmi Bank began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Hanmi Bank. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or state-issued identification number
  • Financial information (e.g., financial account number, credit or debit card number)
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information
  • Unique biometric data
  • Genetic data
